Phase 1 Census 2021 Postponed
Phase 1 Census 2021 Postponed Indefinitely due to COVID 19 (Coronavirus). Govt of India has announced a complete Lockdown in the country from 25th March 2020 to 14th April 2020 due to the outbreak of Cononavirus in the country. The first phase of Census was earlier scheduled to be conducted from the 1st April 2020. Now govt of India postponed this program until further orders released.
Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of India has released a press release regarding the 1st phase Census 2021 Postponement. Census 2020 postponement order is as follows. Situation in the country is decreasing day by day as Coronavirus positive cases increasing day by day. At this point of time, there are 694 total cases registered positive for COVID 19. 43 people have been recovered from this infection and 13 people have lost their life. In this situation, it a must for the government to postpone Census 2020 and the updation of NPR.
The Census 2021 was scheduled to be conducted in two phases, Phase 1 that is House listing & Housing Census during April-September, 2020 and Phase 2, that is Population Enumeration during 9th to 28th February, 2021. The updation of NPR was also proposed to be done along with the Phase I of Census 2021 in all the States/Union Territories except Assam.
Due to the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, high alert has been declared by the Government of India as well as the States/Union Territories. The Ministry of Home Affairs vide order dated 24th March, 2020 has issued Guidelines with the directions for their strict implementation, on the measures to be taken by the Ministries/Departments of Government of India and State/Union Territory Governments for containment of COVID-19 Epidemic in the country. Lockdown has also been declared by many State/UT governments. The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India has issued advisories for various precautionary measures, including social distancing.
Keeping in view the above, the first phase of Census 2021 and updation of NPR, which was to begin on various dates decided by the State/UT governments beginning 1st April 2020 and various related field activities, are postponed until further orders.
